Once again we had arrived during Zimbabwean winter. We didn’t remain in Harare at the onset, but traveled immediately down to Senuko Ranch in Clive and Lin’s Toyota loaded with our gear, including my old mountain bike, about 30 pounds of books for Lin (wolves, coyotes, and other natural history), and a new Canon camera for Clive. He needed to replace the one Lin had run over with the Land Cruiser a couple of weeks earlier. I noticed a big, old “chigubu”—what we would call a “jerry can”—in the back.

“The country is completely out of fuel at the moment, Ed,” acknowledged Clive, seeing my upturned eyebrows. “We got a tanker shipment in last week thanks to John [McTaggart, our other partner]. Without the 5,000 liters of diesel, we’d still be sitting at Senuko and you’d still be sitting at this empty airport.”

“God, Clive, this happened when I was here in ’03,” I said.

“It’s worse this time. No one will give the country any credit. On my return from the States, we were held up in London because Royal Dutch Shell wouldn’t fill up the Air Zim plane on credit. They wanted cash!”

One of the indirect, positive consequences was the little to no traffic on the roads. I always scan for the positive, but I admit that’s a little much.
